Anyone who is dull enough to follow my Twitter feed may recall that I was awestruck by some topiary around the corner from my new gaff the other week. Well after days of frustrated searching I have located the cable for my digital camera so I can bring to you this image.
At the time I think I described the "thing" on the left as "Rupert the Bear on a unicorn". I have been casting around to try to work out what else it's meant to be but have drawn a blank. The face on the right is actually a Janus head which is moderately less crazy. I've got a fancy it looks like Abraham Lincoln, but I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.
I've never been a big fan of topiary. Most of it seems to entail a hell of a lot of work to create a whimsical effect as per above. But there's topiary and topiary, right? Only I've recently invested in a pair of small box balls for either side of the porch and I am hoping I don't suddenly get the desire to clip them into, oh, an iPhone or a possum or something.
OMG! OMG!!!!

the mystery plant looks a bit like knotweed.
Being a bit of a hedge being neat and tidy kind of person I am admiring of the bonkers approach to topiary (how did they manage the horn bit?!!)and wonder if there are some hedge designs out there which look quirky and individual without going too left-field.
I remember seeing a family of elephants cut into a huge hedge in a gardening magazine a few years back, a whale might be nice, even a school of them although you might need to negotiate with the neighbours if it's a shared hedge.
