My trowel dilemma

One of my favourite gardening tools, my bronze trowel, is no more.

Not stolen, no, but damaged beyond repair, which is rather sad - one of my early blogposts recorded how excited I was by its purchase, and it's been a faithful companion on the plot.

But what do I do - invest in another one, just the same, or try a different make? I do love the bronze tools - so light, easy to clean and lovely to use. But is there a better alternative? Not this, that's for sure ...

I don't know about the bronze tools, but I've been very happy with my hand-forged stainless trowel purchased last year. Google "Sneeboer" to find who sells them. They are price-y but well-made.

Hi 1st year alloment holder and great fan of the copper tools.Sorry to hear about your trowel.It would be worth talking to implementations about it. Ihad a problem with my sirius hoe(head fell off-major weed clearance use)They were very helpful on the phone and happy to try to repair it if I was unsuccesful.I've also spotted some new tools to drool over on the web site roll on xmas for guilt-free tool buyage!

That's a good thought Natalie - will drop them a line. They've been very helpful in the past ... and it would be a shame to lose what has been an excellent tool.

Ye gods, those tools are just a step too far. And they come in DIFFERENT floral designs.
What happens if you drop the tool in a bed of flowers ? They're basically camoflagued !

Sorry to hear about your trowel. Our tools are all GUARANTEED (excluding normal wear and tear), so please send it back to me and I will replace it or repair it, whichever is appropriate.

Looking ahead to 2008 There's nothing better than the thrill of turning the crisp pages of the first 2008 seed catalogue to plop onto my doormat. The first to arrive this year was the Real Seed Catalogue, one of my big favourites. No snazzy photography, just a fine collection of interesting and unusual seeds, mostly early varieties so you can grow chillies, tomatoes etc outside. If you insist on seeing photographs, you can check out their very helpful website. I shall be buying more white beetroot seeds, some Cherokee Trail of Tears beans, and some unusual bicolour sweetcorn, at least. Must do a seed...

Turdus pilaris, or my search for a good bird book A sighting of a fieldfare* while on holiday a few weeks back brought back happy memories of my days as a member of the YOC or Young Ornithologists' Club, the youth wing of the RSPB (now, sadly, rebranded as the far more prosaic Wildlife Explorers). I've always had a keen eye for spotting birds, and my interest was rekindled by reading the excellent book How to be a Bad Birdwatcher by Simon Barnes. But I'd like to lay my hands on a really good field guide, because while the RSPB's site is really excellent for helping you to identify birds...
