Everyone's getting an allotment these days.
The Observer Magazine - owned by my employers the Guardian Media Group - is the latest to join the zeitgeist by taking on a plot of their own.
They're lucky enough to have secured a patch of land on a completely organic site in Hampstead, London (did any turnips change hands under the table to secure a site in such a prime location, I wonder?).
They have a blog, of course, which is definitely worth bookmarking I shall be watching their progress with interest: they plan to grow biodynamically, which is a method I thought was totally bonkers until I saw Monty Don (peace be upon him) employing it, and even then I still think it's rather odd to bury cow horns filled with manure and the like - particularly when in the first year I'd rather suspect it's more important to get the bindweed under control. And I am not sure whether some allotmenteers would approve of bringing in 10 tonnes of topsoil, organic or otherwise.
Anyhow, I have written a short post for their blog with a few basic tips on starting out on the plot. (Note the rather out of date pic of me sporting a pumpkin).
