I've long been an admirer of fellow garden blogger and writer Amy Stewart's blogs and books: now she has teamed up with two other US bloggers Michele Owens and Susan Harris to create a group gardening blog called Garden Rant, with their very own ranty manifesto, which I heartily agree with: particularly the bit about gardening your ass off. (I've been gardening my ass off this week, as my arms full of scratches will testify.

Another recommended read, also from Amy, is Don't Get Dirt In The Keyboard, And Other Blogging Tips For Gardeners, which you can find on her personal blog, Dirt. If you want to progress from reading gardening blogs to writing them, this is a great place to start.

Save our plot There's a piece in the Independent today about calls to save allotments in E London that could be wiped out by infrastructure for the 2012 Olympics: the rallying cry is being led by Sam and Sam Clark of the very fine restaurant Moro, which is just around the corner from the Guardian, where I work. One of the oldest plot holders is Albert Dickinson, 86, who has spent 54 years working his plot. The alternative plot being offered to the growers (as is required by law) is right next to a motorway, apparently, and therefore totally unsuitable. And anyway, who...
