I made ice cream for the first time ever tonight, and here's my friend Helen tucking into a bowl of the stuff. It was, in part, a strategy for dealing with my current blackcurrant allotment glut and also a chance to provide colour-coordinated food for Helen's rather lovely top!
The recipe (Delia Smith's Cooker Course, 1981) was dead easy - I am not sure why people bother with ice cream makers, as apart from a little beating it was no hassle at all. The only hard bit was mashing the currants through a sieve to separate pulp from skin - made a lot easier once my ever-wise other half had advised me to blend the fruit before sieving.
The ice cream tasted so divine that I now fear that I shall become an ice cream addict, finding ever more fiendish ways of mixing cream, sugar and fruit ...
I also sent Helen away with a jar of blackcurrant jam so she got the whole soft fruit experience!
MMMmmm. looks fantastic. i bought the $50 williams and sonoma ice cream maker - maybe i didn't need it. i've made coffee, chocolate, and lemon sorbet. you've reminded me to get some peaches or berries. PS - i've moved blog addresses in case you'd like to update. bon apetite :)

I'm no great shakes as a cook, but I always reckon "If in doubt - Do a Delia"...just not one of her complicated ones though!
By the way - Nice new profile pic... looking rather foxy!

Reminds me of the first time we made homeade ice cream as a kid. Store bought ice cream is never as good. I havn't made ice cream in about 20 years. Thanks for the reminder.
