Guerrilla gardening

We've got a great piece over at the Guardian Unlimited News blog about the guerrilla gardening movement:

... we must blitz our cities with plants. Authorities not only have other pressing priorities for their limited resources, but I believe they should focus on doing things that are beyond the abilities of local residents - small-scale, localised gardening is not one of them.

I think I may carry out some guerrilla gardening on a patch of rubbish-strewn ground near my house. I'm thinking mint, thyme, rosemary and other herbs. I'll bring you some before and after pictures soon.

Oh I do like that idea! I think a lot of that has been going on near us anyway - or there are a lot of garden escapees!

Rhubarb recipe I've a most delicious way of eating rhubarb: it's dead simple, just take a few sticks (doesn't matter how green they are, they certainly don't need to be forced rhubarb), and get your hands on a jar of ginger preserved in syrup - you often find them in Chinese shops and most supermarkets. They just chop the rhubarb into chunks and add a couple of balls of the ginger, cut into slivers, along with a few teaspoons of the syrup, and simmer until the mixture's soft. Pieris in a pot If I had to recommend one plant for those who have black thumbs, it would probably be the shrub Pieris. It tolerates a hell of a lot of neglect, is great for container growing and produces gorgeous creamy bell-like flowers followed by red foliage in spring. It's a stunning bush, although my photo doesn't really do it justice. The only possible wrinkle is that if you forget to cut off last season's flower heads once they're dead, you won't get so many flowers the following summer.
