As you can see if you peer closely at the pic, things have taken a new turn with the bird feeder.
Still no visitors of the feathered and clawed kind, but this squirrel was taking a definite interest this morning. It patrolled up and down the fence (it's visible in the pic on the right-hand fence) but couldn't get up the courage to make a leap for the feeder. Sorry about the fuzzy pic but it was taken with a grabbed camera from my study window, paparazzi-style.
I am hoping the peanut stash is far enough from the fence for things to stay that way. I had planned to move it further round so there was more tree cover, but now I am worried this will only encourage the squirrel. Most annoyingly of all, while this was going on, I could see a gang of tits in the tree visible in the top right hand corner of the picture, having a whale of a time, but utterly uninterested in the feeder.
We've got such a problem with squirrels, but i found what seems to be the answer on a website in america. Unfortunately i can't find the link, but a guy in america used empty plastic bottles (1.5litre coke bottle size etc), chopped the bottom off and then stacked them one on top of the other with string holding the feeder, or the base of the bird table, running through the lot. I did this in my garden, and as long as you have about 4 bottles together, the squirrel just can't get at the nuts. They squeeze and move and generally make it impossible to hold onto. It doesn't look pretty, I'll admit, but it does work. I'll try and get a pic of it and stick it on my blog.

I have a few of these guys running around my flower garden all the time. They do tend to make a mess.
