One of the great pleasures of allotmenteering is the abundance of produce that you can give to friends and family. At this time of year, who's going to say no to a rotund pumpkin, a bagful of jerusalem artichokes or a bunch of beetroots?
Rick's got a bit of a bartering system going with a work colleague. Last year, we gave her a pumpkin in return for some Bramley apples, which teamed up with our blackberries for some divine crumbles. This year, the apple harvest wasn't so good, so instead we got six fresh eggs from her two hens, who live in an Eglu (yes, I am jealous). A bit of kitchen magic from Rick, and we were eating home-produced, ultra-local omelette and salad (barring the feta and olives!). Eagle-eyed salad spotters will note rocket (arugula), baby chard leaves, little gem and chicory.
Omelette... mmmmmmm :)
I've spent a year talking the mistress of the house into letting me have an Eglu. Roll on next summer after the extension has gone up - I email you an egg or two ;-)
