My flying saucer

I picked my first patty pan courgette today. It's one of those moments when I revel in the wonders of growing your own veg. This little yellow baby is so perfect that I can hardly bear to eat it. Having said that, it'll go lovely in the salmon kebabs with a marinade of garlic and coriander (both homegrown) I'll be eating tonight in my first BBQ of the year.

A BBQ? In England? That must be why it's cloudy here ...

I know what the speaker meant about the "holy experience" of eating stuff you've grown. It sounds crazy until you try it yourself!

Jobs jobs jobs Here's a list what I should be doing on my allotment this month, if I had time ... Actually, I am being a little hard on myself: the plot's looking ok, and I have managed to plant more rainbow chard for the winter, and some new lettuce varieties, and I've even risked a row of early (ie quick-maturing) beetroot. Who knows when I shall get the time to dig over the pea patch or harvest the rows of potatoes before I go away for a few weeks, leaving the plot in the capable (but busy) hands of my assistant allotmenteer....

Name that flower I am in California (work, not pleasure) and this is the view from my hotel balcony - crispy window box geraniums against a backdrop of olive trees. Can any locals help me out with a question? On the way from the airport to the hotel I spotted hundreds of sky-blue flowers (about the size of bindweed flowers) on ground-hugging plants - seemingly wild - on the side of the highway. I thought they could be blue flax - does anyone have any other suggestions? I couldn't get a photo unfortunately as my taxi whizzed by but if I spot them...
