In a fit of madness known only to Englishmen (and women) I decided a bit of heavy digging was the ideal way to spend a very sunny Sunday. I harvested all the shallots - you can tell they're ready because the leaves keel over and the bulbs become exposted - and a row of early-ish Sante potatoes. So now all I have to do is plait the onions before I hang them in the garage. My usual method is to group them in nines, plaiting three shallots together, then plaiting the three plaits into one big plait. That's then tied and hung up with a piece of string. It's a little crude, but it is effective in making sure they get lots of air circulation while in storage. Has anyone got a more elegant solution?
My trusty assistant Rick harvested the rest of the blackcurrants, and I made a batch of jam. I think the rest will go into summer puddings and, when frozen, some crumbles.
The only trouble is, a doozy of a cold has now come over me. It feels really odd to be sneezing and snotty and reaching for the Lemsip Max when the swallows are arcing through a cloudless sky ...
