This weekend

With the weather looking good for Saturday and Sunday, I've been crafting a list of jobs for the weekend:

It's an ambitious list, given the other non-gardening stuff I need to get done at the weekend, not least blogging. But spring waits for no woman.

Potting on When it comes to time off from work, if I am not away on holiday, there's nothing more satisfying than a bit of houseplant maintenance/allotment work/gardening to keep me out of trouble. Today the weather can only be described as "filthy", so allotmenteering/gardening is out: instead I decided to repot a 3ft tall Dracaena marginata that had become seriously pot bound. I forgot to mention this problem in my houseplant care notes below, but if a houseplant of yours is looking really sad (wilting or yellowing leaves, not growing at all, looking dull or lifeless) and you've tried everything else,...

Biodegradable, you think? I was replacing the filter in my cooker hood today and noticed for the first time that it claimed to be biodegradable (yes, my several years of clumsy attempts at learning Italian allowed me to translate "fibra senza cloro" as "fibre without chlorine"). So the question is, do I put this spent filter on my compost heap? As a one meat reducer/one veggie household, it's unlikely to be covered in anything other than vegetable fats, but it still seems a little counter-intuitive to stick it on the heap. Does biodegradable mean the same as compostable? Answers on a postcard please...
