Today's tip: how to avoid poking your eye out
I know a friend of a friend who nearly lost his eye when he failed to see a bamboo cane while gardening. He bent over and ... well you can guess the rest. How to avoid such stick-related injuries? Just take a plastic drinks bottle, remove the label and cap and place it over the top of any bamboo canes you have that are shorter than you are.
It doesn't look particularly pretty: fine for the allotment but perhaps not for your garden. The more picturesque (but expensive) alternative is placing a small terracotta pot (holes sealed up from the inside) on top of the canes.
We use 'Actimel' bottles and the also act as good noise deterrents for unwanted visitors tempted by my shallots!
