Chickens little

I've always wanted some chickens. Not to eat, you understand, (although I do eat chicken occasionally), but as pets, and for their manure and eggs. Reading the wonderful Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance hasn't helped cure me of the desire.

At the moment I have neither the time nor space to make a Perrone chicken flock possible. So I've been enjoying reading Amy Stewart's blog about rearing four ultra-cute chicks.

Storing seed If you happen to be a reader of the Guardian's letters pages, you'll probably know about the recent exchanges over uses for 35mm film canisters. For me, they're a great way of storing surplus or self-collected seed: airtight, dry and secure. The only trouble is, these days they're in short supply as I usually ditch my bulky SLR in favour of my digital camera.
