I thought I'd offer some inspiration to anyone trying to think of gifts for a gardener in their life, or looking to treat themselves to something horticultural.
Here are a few gifts that no gardener will turn their nose up at:
- A copper tool from Implementations
- Copper plant tags from Gardening Emporium or Hortus Ornamenti
- An oak seed line from Hortus Ornamenti
- A retro watering can from Gardenopoly
- A shiitake mushroom log from Ragmans Lane Farm
- A lantern from Garden Ornamenta
- Grow Your Own Vegetables by Joy Larkcom, available from Amazon
- A subscription to Organic Gardening magazine
And a couple of stocking fillers:
- A big roll of jute twine from the Organic Gardening Catalogue
- A kitchen caddy from the Organic Gardening Catalogue
It's about as unChristmassy as you can get, but the other thing I have to recommend is Drain Mate, available from the Organic Gardening Catalogue. A scoop of this powder, left in a jug of warm water for an hour or so then poured down the plughole of a sink or shower, works wonders on blockages. The naturally-occurring bacteria in Drainmate gets to work on whatever goo is blocking the drain, without using the harsh chemicals you get in most drain clearing products so you won't have to wear a gas mask to use it!
It's pricey at £8.95 but you only need a scoop each time, and once your drains are clear you'll only need a "maintenance" dose every now and again. In the wake of the remains of the Christmas roasting pan going into your sink, this could prevent your kitchen smelling of turkey grease until 2005.
