The US election appears to be all over, and after a night at my desk left me pretty weary as I rolled home this morning. I perked myself up with a large handful of fresh pineapple - a fruit I am unlikely to be able to grow myself unless I win the lottery and can create my own version of Heligan's marvellous pineapple pits - and pay lots of staff to keep it stocked with manure night and day.
I am planning to feast on yet another batch of beetroot and feta soup tonight, made with this rather colourful selection of beets. One of the great things you learn when allotmenteering is that everything you think you know about veg is up for grabs: a carrot isn't necessarily orange, or carrot-shaped: an apple isn't always a Granny Smith or a Gala and beetroots can be red, white, yellow, or striped like bull's eyes.
