The problem with reading the fabulous Monty Don on why quinces are wonderful is that it makes me hanker after a garden large enough to accommodate a few fruit trees...

Darling dahlia Just back from a trip to Canada which included a visit to Butchart Gardens n Vancouver Island. It was ingeniously created from an exhausted limestone quarry exactly 100 years ago. Beautiful though it undoubtedly was, it wasn't really my cup of tea. The planting in a lot of the gardens within the garden were a case of "bung in the annuals": as soon as anything starts to wilt or die off, it's whipped out and replaced with more temporary bedding. The result was a blaze of colour, certainly, but not particularly sustainable or likely to get a thumbs up from...

Heritage Seed Library I got my membership of the Heritage Seed Library today plus free sample of Caseknife bean seeds. When the catalogue is sent in a few weeks' time I can choose six packets of seed, which is exciting. I am hoping that there will be a chance to get some Whanga Crown seeds - the squash variety we've adopted at Guardian Unlimited. I am trying to find out some more info about the variety aside from that it hails from New Zealand: all info welcome.
