The newly-sharpened hoe worked like a dream: I would show you the before and after pix but, for various reasons, my digital camera is in Barcelona until Monday (it's got to have a holiday from all those plant pictures some time). Lots of pix post-Monday when the camera returns home, I promise.
I now really need to go and mow my lawn, but I just can't drum up the energy in this afternoon's muggy weather. I've let it grow fairly long on the grounds that it's better environmentally, using less water and coping better in drought conditions. I'll also mulch the lawn with the clippings - shame I don't have one of those mulching mowers, but on the other hand, it means I can spread the cuttings about exactly as I want.

Final update: the African horned cucumber (kiwano) that germinated a while back are going great guns! (You guessed it, pix to come). They're meant to be grown under glass, but seeing as a) I don't own a greenhouse/polytunnel and b) I like to live dangerously, I am going to attempt to grow them on the allotment, possibly with the help of my tallest coldframe.
Off now to eat, among other things, a vegetable stew featuring last year's dwarf french beans (Tendergreen) that I dried and stored over winter, purple sprouting brocolli and rainbow chard...
