A new trug

Dscn1783I treated myself to this rather lovely willow trug with a bit of the money from the advance on my book.

I bought it online from Great British Baskets, a Somerset-based company that makes willow baskets, trugs and other items. It took what seemed like ages to arrive, but I was delighted with the final product. Here you can see it stuffed with produce from the allotment - some oversized courgettes, French beans, red onions, carrots, potatoes, magenta dahlias and several pounds of tomatoes.

I'd gotten sick of having to put everything in plastic bags, which inevitably get filthy and are hard to reuse. This basket should keep me going for years. I've lined it with some old tea towels, which I can wash if they get muddy.

Very nice, very cool.

I have a Sussex trug and love it - carries tools in winter and produce in summer. Nothing like having a decent basket with handles that don't give way when you put a lot in it!

Have fun with yours - hadn't seen willow ones before. Looks good!

I'm a sucker for baskets of all types, but especially hard-working baskets, and that's one of the loveliest I've ever seen.

how fun to buy something in the spirit of what got you the advance in the first place. i wish you much success. you also "won" an award of sorts in the tomato contest over at my blog. well done :)

Bette Midler on gardening:

  • "My whole life had been spent waiting for an epiphany, a manifestation of God's presence, the kind of transcendent, magical experience that lets you see your place in the big picture. And that is what I had with my first compost heap."
