Reasons to be fruitful: number one

It's National Allotments Week this week, although I haven't seen any hint publicity on my allotment site about that fact. There's a list of events going on this week, so do check if there's one in your area you can support.

Nevertheless, to celebrate I'll be coming up with one good reason every day to become an allotmenteer. Add your reasons in the comments below.

Reason Number One
Every time you go to the supermarket and pick up a bland, flavourless, shrink-wrapped excuse for a lettuce, think about what you could be doing instead: harvesting something you've nurtured from seed to salad bowl, a leaf so fresh and flavoursome it bears no relation to its insipid mass-produced relative.

My Photo

Bette Midler on gardening:

  • "My whole life had been spent waiting for an epiphany, a manifestation of God's presence, the kind of transcendent, magical experience that lets you see your place in the big picture. And that is what I had with my first compost heap."
